Different Kinds of Headache

Even if you know the symptoms and warning signs, you might not be sure that you have a Migraine. That's why you should talk to your doctor. Only your doctor can diagnose a Migraine. Some other common types of headache include:

Tension headaches

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Dull, aching head pain
  • The sensation of tightness or pressure across your forehead or on the sides and back of your head
  • Tenderness on your scalp, neck, and shoulder muscles
  • Occasional loss of appetite
Sinus headaches

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Pain, pressure, and fullness in your cheeks, brow or forehead
  • Pain may worsen when bending forward or lying down
  • Yellow-green or blood-tinged nasal discharge
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Achy feeling in your upper teeth
Hormone headaches

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Often associated with changing hormone levels that occur during menstruation, and before pregnancy
  • Chemically induced hormone changes, such as with birth control pills, may also trigger these headaches in some women
Cluster headaches

Typical signs and symptoms include:

  • Excruciating pain, generally located in or around the eye, but may radiate to other areas of the face, head, neck, and shoulders
  • One-sided pain
  • Restlessness
  • Excessive tearing
  • Redness in the eye of the affected side
  • Stuffy or runny nasal passage in the nostril on the affected side of your face
  • Sweaty, pale skin (pallor) on the face
  • Swelling around the eye on the affected side of your face
  • Reduced pupil size
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Can occur in "clusters" over a period of a week to a year
